Are you bummed out that you can’t make it to the Beach this Memorial Day weekend? Everyone knows that @75% of North-Delawareans head south for Memorial Day Weekend. I think that’s the reason why most local venues steer away from planning any major Holiday Events. Some of us are not that fortunate. If you’re among the 25% you may consider some of these, day trip options, water-front activities and our various fun beach alternatives.
Have Fun in Your Own Backyard
Why not plan a BBQ and invite any and all friends and neighbors left in town. Chances are they are looking for something fun to do too. You can make and play games, like, Penny Can, Corn Hole or Horseshoes. Build a fire pit and roast marshmellows! Fall asleep under the stars. You don’t need a tent, just lots of bug spray!
Don’t be jealous of your friends sinking their toes in the sand. Get a blow up pool, long and wide enough for you to emerge your whole body. Close your eyes and imagine you are off on some fabulous Island while you relax & catch some rays.
A Picnic in the Park
North Delaware is loaded with fabulous parks and some are even located on the water. Grab some grubb and pack up the family for day of hiking, biking, boating, fishing, rock climbing or disc golf. If you just want to chill in the grass then that’s ok too. Wherever you are, whatever activities you’re looking for, your Delaware State Parks have something perfect for you to do!
BE A tourist in Your Own Town
Oddly enough I’ve been to the Louvre in Paris and haven’t been to Winterthur. I have a feeling I’m not the only “world traveler” out there who has put off sight-seeing in their own town. There are so many great places to tour, such as, Winterthur, Hagley, Longwood Gardens, The History Museum, The Children’s Museum and so much more.

DAY TRIP IDEAS
A Little Bit of History
For a historical adventure hit the road and head to Gettysburg. The three-day battleground in 1863 of the Civil War, is remembered for being the largest battle ever fought in North America. More than 165,000 soldiers fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and 51,000 soldiers died.
There’s plenty to do like a bus or walking tour of the battlegrounds, a ghost tour, museum visits and more.
On Monday, the town of Gettysburg’s 145th Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies will be held starting at 2 p.m
30 Minutes to Philly
I just read about a new Pier that is opening in Philly this weekend, Morgan’s Pier. This huge wooden deck has been compared to a “backyard beer garden”. Apparantly, this spot just popped up at Penn’s Landing & has fun bites and 20 craft beers on draft.
Other Philadelphia options include but are not limited to; the Philadelphia Zoo, The Please Touch Museum, The Franklin Institute, South Street, a trip to Geno’s or Pat’s, Rittenhouse Square. Check out www.visitphilly.com for more information.
