Thinking of a short cut? Got 8-10 inches? How often can you say your hair inspired someone in the purest way? Whether for children or adults, male or female, the opportunites are split endless. Thinking about donating? No better time than the present. Summer is a great time to sport the new short style. 8 to 10 inches is all you need which for most healthy heads is just short of 2 years worth of growth. Here are two great organizations to consider – Locks of Love and Beautiful Lengths. Until recently, we had only know about Locks of Love. That is, until a dear friend of ours, a multi-Locks of Love and Beautiful Lengths donator, who is now enduring chemo and radiation treatments herself, informed us that Locks of Love only gives donations to those under 21. So we wanted to be sure to spread the word about Beautiful Lengths as well which supports womens real-hair donations too.
Locks & Lengths Deliver Hope
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. LOL provides hairpieces and repairs free of charge or on a sliding scale based on the financial need of those responsible for the children. Retail cost of the hairpieces is between $3,500 and $6,000.
How to Donate
Anyone can cut your hair as long as the guidelines listed are followed. 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece. We encourage all of our donors to go to a salon they are already familiar with to ensure their comfort when donating. Learn more about the guidelines for locks donations here.
DID YOU KNOW?
It takes 8-15 ponytails to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig, and each one comes from a different person with a different shade of hair.
Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society, the largest non-profit health organization committed to saving lives from every cancer and improving the quality of life for people facing the disease. The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong, beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. So far, Pantene has donated 24,000 free real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society’s wig banks, which distribute wigs to cancer patients across the country. To see if you are eligible to receive a free wig or if there are wigs available in your area, please call the American Cancer Society’s Wig Bank Line at 1-877-227-1596.
How to Donate
To us, it’s hair, but to women with cancer, it’s hope. Go to Donation Requirements to learn more about donating your hair.
