A 2009 graduate of the Charter School of Wilmington, Andrew Gemmell is making his first Olympic appearance after qualifying in the 1,500m freestyle. He placed 3rd in the 2011 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships. He began swimming at 2-years-old and still does it for 2 to 4 hours, 6 days a week. The 21-year-old is majoring in economics at the University of Georgia, where he posted a 4.0 GPA in his first semester. As per NBCOlympics.com. Watch his qualifying win video here!

2011-2012: • Placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and 12th in the 400 individual medley at the NCAA Championships. • Also competed in the 500 freestyle at the NCAAs. • Finished fourth in the 1,650 freestyle, fifth in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 400 individual medley at the SEC Championships. • Selected as the SEC Swimmer of the Week for his efforts against Texas. • Named to the Dean’s List and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll following the Fall Semester. • Named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. • Named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll following the Spring Semester. • Recognized by the UGA Athletic Association for having all As during his academic career. • Chosen as a member of the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. • Named the recipient of the Morton S. Hodgson Jr. Swimming and Diving Scholarship. • Won the men’s 10-kilometer race in the Open Water National Championships.
2010-2011: • Recognized by the UGA Athletic Association as a Scholar-Athlete honoree. • Received recognition from UGA Athletic Association for earning all A’s during his academic career thus far at Georgia. • Redshirted and did not see any action for the Bulldogs. • Named to the United States’ team for the 2011 World University Games. • Inducted into the inaugural UGA Student-Athlete Leadership Academy based on academic and athletic success, leadership, campus and community service involvement, and recommendations of head coaches and academic counselors. • Named the recipient of the 2010-2011 Morton S. Hodgson, Jr. Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholarship.
2009-2010: • Came in 12th in the 1,650 freestyle and 15th in the 400 individual medley at the NCAA Championships. • Competed in the 500 freestyle at the NCAAs. • Named Second-Team All-Southeastern Conference after his runner-up finish in the 1,650 freestyle at the league meet. • Placed sixth in the 400 individual medley and 10th in the 500 freestyle at the SECs. • Named a Presidential Scholar with a 4.0 GPA as a member of the Fall 2009 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. • Named to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. • Chosen as an Academic All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
International: • Won the men’s 10-kilometer race in the 2012 Open Water National Championships. • Won gold in the 5-kilometer team race at 2011 World Championships. Individually, was fifth and was the fastest American in the Open Water 5K. • Was the 2011 USA Swimming national champion in the 1,500m freestyle. • Named to the 2011 World University Games team. • Placed fifth in the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in the 1,500m freestyle. • Selected as a member of the 2009-2010 United States National Team. • Was the silver medalist in the 10K open water race at 2009 World Championships and took fifth place in the 5K. • Named 2009 USA Swimming Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year. • Won the 400 individual medley at 2008 Youth World Championships.
