ABOUT THE WINEMAKER

Michael Richmond was named winemaker in 2002. His approach is on the grapes themselves, carefully blending the various vineyard blocks to create wines that capture the elegance of Burgandy and the exuberance of Napa.

“Being at Bouchaine has rekindled the student in me. Though wine is steeped in tradition, it is vital to stay current with trends and new technologies in the most dynamic of industries. I don’t accept innovations automatically, but it’s incumbent on me to try them on for size. Winemaking is a very soft science.”

– Michael Richmond, Bouchaine Winemaker

Wine Label for BouchaineABOUT BOUCHAINE & THE COPELANDS

The Bouchaine Winery is the oldest winery operating in the Carneros District and it is owned by Wilmington’s own Tatiana and Geret Copeland. I’m sure you are well aware of Tatiana and Geret for all of their Philanthropic endeavors related to the Arts and Enviornment in Delaware, but were you aware that they were responsible for bringing the fabulous Bouchaine Chardonnay’s and Pinot’s to Delaware?

I have to say that I am a true fan.

In 1981, following their love for wine, Tatiana and Geret Copeland along with some other investors purchased the Bouchaine Winery and surrounding vineyards. This was at a time whem only winemaking pioneers realized the potential for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Carneros.

“My first trip to Bouchaine, in 1981, was for testing rather than a tasting. I was on a business trip in LA, and my husband called to tell me that there was a winery in Napa Valley for sale… Now, almost 30 years later, the property had truly blossomed into an elegant country winery, and I am ever more delighted.”

– Tatiana Copeland, Owner Bouchaine Winery

Geret and Tatiana Copeland

“I fell in love with Burgandy on my first trip there with my father, when I was 16. The world of wine caught my imagination and never left it. Bouchaine is the realization of my boyhood dream.”

– Gerret Copeland, Owner Bouchaine Winery

The Copelands bought out the partnership in 1991 and completely rebuilt the winery from top to bottom as well as replanting almost all of the estate vineyards. In 1995 they purchased the adjoining winery giving them more than 100 acres of estate vineyards in Carneros.
