YOUR GUIDE TO A WEEKEND FULL Of FESTIVITIES…
Outdoor Caberets to Chihuahua Dog Races
Cinco de Mayo falls on a Sunday this year and many of the area bars & restaurants have turned it into a 3-4 Day celebration!
I bet 7 out of 10 people celebrating Cinco de Mayo have no clue what the celebration is about…do you?
Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May, is not Mexico’s Independence Day, but it is a day to celebrate Mexico’s unlikely win over France at the Battle of Puebla. It’s a celebration of pride and heritage that continues today in America and in Mexico, mostly in the town of Puebla. Today in America almost everyone with and without a Mexican Heritage celebrates the culture by eating the finest Mexican fare and drinking their favorite Mexican Cocktails like Margarita’s, Sangria and Cerveza’s…much like the “everyone’s Irish on St. Patty’s Day” mentality.

DP’s is starting the party on Thursday night with $14 Domestic Buckets and $18 Imported Buckets from Thursday -Sunday along with their normal specials. They have so much going on; Kenny Chesney ticket giveaways, enter to win a trip to Mexico, t-shirt sales to benefit Luekemia/Lyphoma, Corona Girls & lots of beer and tequila swag.
The DON will stay open a little later on Saturday and Sunday Night and will feature a few bands on Sunday; Chad Racine & Spokey Speaky. From what I gather Sunday is the BIG FUN Day at The DON.
Many people think that’s the name of the restaurant due to the HUGE sign on top. This place is jumping on Cinco de Mayo. Better make plans to go early as the parking lot fills up and cars line the streets all the way down to Chili’s and the Hotel. Apparently, they have a deal with these places to allow their patrons to park. They also have such a great turnout that they set up a tent in the parking lot! The fun runs from 11:30 am- 12pm on Saturday and Sunday with Bands performing from 6-9pm Saturday night and Sunday from 5-9.pm. Specials include $4 Corona/Imported Beer, $5 16oz Margarita’s.
THE MEXICAN POST, Wilmington
A North Wilmington favorite is starting their celebration Thursday & culminating with a BIG block party on Sunday starting at 9:30am.
FREE valet parking, DRINK specials, SINK for Justin Dunk Tank & Prizes. All proceeds benefit Wilmington PD officer Justin Wilkers
HEADING SOUTH FOR CINCO?
It’s the Dewey Beach 2nd Annual “Cinco de Mayo” weekend celebration for families, May 4th & 5th. Starting off with the “Dog Races” being held at the Lifesaving Station on Dagsworthy Street.
The Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua race will be held at the Lifesaving Station on Dagsworthy Street at noon on Saturday May 4, with the fastest dog receiving a $100 prize. They will race in a 30-40 yard fenced area next to the Lifesaving Station. Last year, 19 Chihuahuas were entered in the contest. A second “I wish I was a Chihuahua” race for a $50 prize will also be held for other small dogs weighing less than 15 pounds.
On Sunday, May 5, also at noon, Chihuahuas and other under-15 pound dogs will strut in their finest Cinco de Mayo costumes. This event will also be held at the Dagsworthy Lifesaving Station site.
An entry fee of $20 is required for each dog entered in the races. All net proceeds for the weekend events will be donated to the Dewey Beach Patrol.
Registration will be possible on the morning of the races beginning at 11 a.m. at the Lifesaving Station. In addition, dogs may be preregistered by sending an email to Cinco de Mayo Coordinator, Joe Kane, at [email protected] or by mail at PO Box 1329, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
