The Blood Bank of Delmarva, along with blood centers from around the WORLD, will celebrate World Blood Donor Day on Thursday, June 14, 2012. Donors will receive a special NexCare “GIVE” bandage.
“World Blood Donor Day is an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for the heroes who voluntarily donate blood each day and save lives throughout our community,” said Roy Roper, President and CEO of Blood Bank of Delmarva. “Blood Bank of Delmarva’s dedicated blood donors have helped the organization maintain a safe, adequate blood supply and avoid serious shortages that often affect other areas of the country and world. We are always grateful to them for their selfless act, but on June 14 we take an extra moment to thank them for their life-saving donations and ask that they share how vitally important blood donations are to our community.”
June 11- 15th — The global celebration of blood donors is an opportunity to express gratitude to those who donate their blood, without expecting anything in return. Every person who gives blood the week of World Blood Donor Day (June 11-June 15) will receive a special Nexcare “GIVE” bandage as part of the company’s national effort to raise awareness about the need for blood donation and inspire action. The limited edition collection of Nexcaregive Bandages features patterns based on iconic trends of decades past to serve as a reminder for current and potential donors that “Giving Blood is Timeless.”
“Giving Blood is Timeless.”
“We are committed to raising awareness for the ongoing need for blood donation, and are passionate about thanking those who donate regularly,” said Luiz Castro, global business manager, Nexcare Brand, Consumer Health Care Division. “Through the fourth annual Nexcare give program, our goal is to inspire more people to give and recognize those who already do. We hope blood donors will wear their Nexcaregive Bandages with pride to show their dedication for the cause and encourage others to get involved.”
There is a universal need for safe and secure supplies of blood and blood products. Worldwide, at least 90 million units of blood are donated each year to save lives and improve health. However, demand for blood for transfusion continues to increase, and many countries cannot meet existing needs. In many regions, this means inadequate supplies to replace blood lost in childbirth, which is a major cause of maternal deaths in some parts of the world, and to treat anemia which threatens the lives of children who have malaria or are undernourished.
Observe World Blood Donor Day by making an appointment to give blood at one the 34 convenient locations across Delmarva. Visit www.delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.
Thousands of Blood Bank members are currently enrolled in the plateletpheresis program and donate platelets (a component of blood critically needed to treat people with leukemia and cancer) as often as every two weeks. The Blood Bank also has a “LifeSaver” program with members who have signed up to be “on-call” when there is an extra need for their blood type. More than 350 blood donors are needed every day on Delmarva to support the blood supply at local hospitals.
