Understand the person behind the badge. Participate, serve and learn what it takes to protect the largest city in the State of Delaware.

The City of Wilmington’s Citizens Police Academy is an eight (8) week course, scheduled to begin on September 16th, 2014 and will continue to meet once a week on Tuesday evenings from 6:00p.m-8:00pm. This program is designed to provide members of the City of Wilmington’s community with additional knowledge about their police department.  It allows citizens of the City of Wilmington to become more educated on the Wilmington Police Department’s procedures and the pressures associated within law enforcement. We seek to invite a diverse group of people that either live in or work in the City of Wilmington. There is no cost to attend the Citizen Police Academy.

4 Goals

The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to accomplish four goals:

  1. To educate community members in the City of Wilmington Police Departments procedures and the pressures associated within law enforcement.
  2. To allow the citizens of Wilmington to meet the men and women who serve them.
  3. To provide the Wilmington Police Department officers the opportunity to meet and hear from the citizens they serve.
  4. To form a working relationship with the community to ensure a better quality of life.

The academy will meet once a week at the Wilmington Police Department Public Safety Building.

Presentations will consist of lectures, demonstrations, videos, computer presentations, and “hands on” participation.  Each participant will be is given the opportunity to ride with an officer for at least one shift.

How to Obtain an Application

You may obtain an application for the Citizen Police Academy at the Wilmington Police Department. Media representatives are welcome and encouraged to apply. Applications are due no later than September 5, 2014
